After years of smoking accelerated visible aging across her face, this 62-year-old patient chose Dr. Barone for a facelift. Using her signature approach, Dr. Barone restored definition to her contours and took years off her appearance.

A Facelift Addresses Common Concerns

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, can improve visible signs of aging on the face by tightening facial muscles, removing excess skin and fat, and redraping the skin of the face and neck. Rhytidectomy is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures because it effectively addresses several problems that can affect the face as we age, such as:

  • Wrinkles and Fine Lines
  • Sun Damage
  • Jowls Below the Jawline
  • Deep Creases Between the Nose and Mouth
  • Excess Fat and Folds Around the Neck

A facelift can give the entire face a refreshed, more youthful appearance. When combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures such as an eyelid procedure or a brow lift, you can achieve a total facial makeover that helps you look and feel years younger.

Deep Plane Facelift in San Antonio

If you are looking for a way to roll back the clock and experience transformative, natural-looking results, a deep plane facelift may be the solution for you. We understand the emotional impact aging can have on your self-esteem and overall well-being. At Barone Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Constance Barone is dedicated to helping you achieve the renewed confidence and radiance you desire.

What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A traditional facelift primarily focuses on tightening the skin and the SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) separately; the deep plane facelift goes further. It lifts the skin and the deeper muscle layers together. By releasing key facial ligaments that hold tissues in place, Dr. Barone can reposition the mid-face, jawline, and neck more effectively. Because the tension is placed on the deeper structures rather than the skin itself, the result is a softer, more harmonious rejuvenation with virtually no "surgical pulled" look associated with traditional facelifts.

Benefits of the Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift at Barone Plastic Surgery offers several distinct advantages over traditional methods. Here are the key benefits you can expect from a deep plane facelift:

  • Enhanced Facial Harmony
  • Minimal Visible Scarring
  • Comprehensive Rejuvenation
  • Long-Lasting Results
  • Mid-Face Rejuvenation
  • Defined Jawline & Neck
  • Natural Appearance
  • Faster Healing

The "Awake" Facelift Option

Understanding that many patients are concerned about general anesthesia, Dr. Barone is a leader in "awake" surgery. For qualifying patients, she can perform facial rejuvenation using local anesthesia and mild sedation. This allows for a quicker recovery, less post-operative nausea, and a more comfortable overall experience.

The Recovery Process

smiling woman

After a deep plane facelift at Barone Plastic Surgery, most patients find the recovery to be smoother than expected.

Days 1–3: Initial swelling and mild discomfort, which can be managed with medication.

Week 1: Most sutures are removed. You will begin to see the new contours of your jawline.

Days 10–14: Most patients feel comfortable returning to social activities and work. Any residual bruising can usually be camouflaged with makeup.

1–3 Months: Final results continue to refine as subtle swelling disappears, leaving you with a vibrant, rested appearance.

Complementary Procedures

To achieve a "full face" rejuvenation, many patients choose to combine their facelift with:

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): To brighten tired-looking eyes

Brow Lift: To smooth forehead creases and lift heavy brows

Fat Transfer: To restore youthful volume to the temples or lips

Lip Lift: Shortens the space between the nose and upper lip, creating a fuller, more youthful look

Laser Skin Resurfacing: Uses focused light to improve skin texture and reduce wrinkles

Deep Plane Neck Lift (Structural Neck Lift) Beyond Skin Tightening: Redefining the Jawline From the Inside Out

Achieve long-lasting neck rejuvenation with a smoother, more defined neck profile by addressing connective tissue and underlying muscles.

What Is a Deep Plane Neck Lift?

A deep plane neck lift is an advanced surgical procedure that achieves comprehensive rejuvenation of the neck by addressing both deep anatomical and superficial structures. Traditional neck lifts focus primarily on tightening the skin. Deep plane techniques involve lifting and repositioning the connective tissues and deeper muscular structure beneath the skin and submental fat. This layered approach ensures a more natural and long-lasting improvement in neck contour and overall facial harmony.

Deep plane neck lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation, depending on the case. Most procedures last 2.5 to 4 hours.

  • Incisions: Typically placed discreetly behind the ears and under the chin
  • Adjuncts: May include fat transfer, skin resurfacing, or eyelid surgery for complete facial rejuvenation
  • Technique: Releasing and repositioning the platysma muscle, deep fat, and connective tissue
  • Closure: Layered closure with fine sutures to promote minimal scarring

Because hidden incisions are performed, there is no tension on the skin. Patients can look forward to natural contours and smoother transitions between the face and neck.

If you're experiencing signs of aging on your neck that have impacted your self-confidence, a deep plane neck lift offers a comprehensive solution. Recovery After a Deep Plane Neck Lift

It will take about one to two weeks of downtime after a deep plane neck lift. You will need this time to rest as your body heals. You will experience bruising and swelling, which will worsen during your downtime and then begin to go down after about two weeks. You will need to sleep with your head elevated to help reduce swelling. Do not lift anything over five pounds or exert yourself in any way as you're healing. Do not turn or twist your neck. Most patients can return to light, sedentary work within 7-14 days. It will take about a month before you are able to exercise lightly again. Expect the sensation of tightness and numbness that will last for about two months. You will not be able to exercise strenuously during this time. Dr. Barone and her dedicated team provide detailed post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery, including pain management strategies and wound care guidance.

A Traditional Facelift The Step-by-Step Process

A facelift can be either an inpatient or outpatient procedure. We can perform it at our surgical center or at one of our affiliated hospitals in the San Antonio area. The procedure involves several steps:

A facelift with Dr. Barone typically takes about two hours to complete.
A facelift with Dr. Barone typically takes about two hours to complete.

Anesthesia

Dr. Barone can perform your facelift using either general anesthesia, which will put you into a deep sleep, or with local anesthesia and a sedative. Sometimes called an "awake" facelift, a facelift using local anesthesia can allow for a much quicker post-operative recovery and help you to return to daily tasks faster.

Incisions

Your plastic surgeon will make incisions. One popular technique is to make incisions in the hairline and around the ears so any scarring can be easily hidden.

Facelift

Once the incisions are made, Dr. Barone will remove excess skin and fat. She will tighten the remaining skin in a manner that creates a healthier, more youthful appearance. Your plastic surgeon will take special care to ensure your results are natural-looking.

Sutures

Your incisions will be sutured closed. Most patients can return home on the same day as their surgery.

Making Your Facelift Last

Facelifts are a great way for both men and women to shave years off their appearance. Generally, the results of your rejuvenation can be expected to last about 10 years. While the results of your facelift will fade due to the natural aging process, you can prolong your results with some simple practices:

  • Wear Sunscreen
  • Wear Protective Clothing
  • Don't Smoke
  • Use Moisturizer
  • Apply Retinol

Understanding the QuickLift A Minimally-Invasive Facelift Technique

Do you want a facelift, but you're put off by the idea of a long recovery time and an invasive procedure? The QuickLift® is a revolutionary technique that can cut recovery times while still effectively shaving off 10 years or more from your appearance. This method lifts and tightens loose skin in the lower region of the face using just local anesthesia and a few small incisions around the ears.

QuickLift candidates are typically 40–65+ years of age with moderate to extensive sagging skin in the lower portion of their face, such as the lower cheeks, jawline, and under the chin.

Results, time of surgery, and downtime after surgery vary from patient to patient.
